The Wall Street Journal called the COSIC research group “an encryption power house”: “Packed with hardware and laptop-wielding students in jeans and sneakers, COSIC’s labs develop new encryption for corporate clients, or test their in-house antihacking technology.” (Wall Street Journal, dd. 10/12/2015). COSIC provides broad expertise in digital security and strives for innovative security solutions. Its research is applied in a broad range of application domains, such as electronic payments, identity cards, e-voting, protection of e-documents, smart meters and smart grid, telematics for the automobile industry, trusted systems and more. COSIC’s research focus lays in the design, evaluation and attack resistant implementations of cryptographic algorithms and protocols, the development of security architectures for information and communication systems, the development of security mechanisms for embedded systems and the design and analysis of privacy preserving systems. The group has as goal to cover the whole range from mathematical theory, realizations into IOT and the cloud, and towards industrial applications.
  • You have a master's degree in electrical engineering, computer science or engineering, mathematics or cryptography, or equivalent experience
  • You achieved good grades during your education
  • You have developed your research skills during your Master’s studies
  • You have a keen interest in cryptography, security and privacy
  • You can work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary  research team
  • You have excellent knowledge of English, both in speaking and writing

The COSIC research group has several open PhD positions covering different aspects of cryptography and security, reporting to the different faculty members of COSIC.

• PhD position on lightweight MPC-friendly symmetric cryptography
