A full-time, indivisible position in the field of Veterinary Bacteriology and Animal Bacterial Diseases within the Department of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (DMI).

For several decades now, the DMI has epitomised excellence in its research missions (high-level fundamental and applied research, prestigious awards and funding), community services (important functions in various actions and organisations to combat infectious and parasitic diseases) and teaching (involvement in all levels of education, major contribution to doctorates in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine).

Applicants must have a profile compatible with all the missions expected of a university professor i.e., teaching, research activities and services to the Community. As DMI members define themselves as “research professors”, candidates should have significant research experience. In order to contribute to the scientific reputation of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and to promote synergy with its clinicians, the successful applicant will have to establish their laboratory within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. It will be up to them to choose their affiliation with a research unit in the University of Liège.

Teaching activities:

As teaching activities are currently being reorganised, the information below is given only as an illustration of the teaching load associated with this item. It includes undergraduate and post-graduate courses.

  • Veterinary bacteriology (VETE0067, Block B3, 24h Th + 10h TP + 2h TD).
  • Infectious and parasitic diseases of domestic animals, including zoonoses (joint post-holder):Bacterial diseases of production animals and wildlife (VETE2071, Block M1, 18h Th),Bacterial diseases of domestic animals (VETE2069, Block M1, 12h Th),Bacterial diseases of equidae (VETE2070, Block M1, 6h Th).
  • Case-by-case reasoning in veterinary infectiology and parasitology (joint post-holder):Bacteriology (VETE2088, Block M2, 4h PCL).
  • Various postgraduate courses in veterinary and medical bacteriology.
  • Research Activities:

    Research experience should be demonstrated by several of the following: high level publications, scientific awards, research experience abroad, ability to generate significant funding and the abilityto develop and lead a team, and supervision of doctoral theses.

    The candidate will be involved in research projects related to one or more of the following themes:

  • Pathogenesis of bacterial infections,
  • Bacterial resistance to antibiotics and antiseptics as part of the “One Health” principle,
  • Therapeutic and/or prophylactic alternatives to antibiotics and antiseptics,
  • Epidemiology of pathogenic bacteria within the framework of the “One Health” principle.
  • Services to the Community:

    The candidate will be involved in community service activities, such as the continuing education of veterinarians, participation in regional and national working groups in animal infectiology, promotion of medical bacteriology to the general public and to students of medical bacteriology within the framework of the “One Health” principle, veterinary medicine, sciences in general and the University of Liège. They will also play an active role in the life of the Department, the Facultyand the Institution.

    Qualifications required– profile:

  • Doctor of veterinary medicine or equivalent title.
  • Hold a research doctorate.
  • Possession of a specialist diploma from a European College related to bacteriology will be considered a plus but is not a condition for obtaining this position.
  • Must be fluent in English and French. In the event that the candidate does not speak French, they will undertake to master the French language during the probationary period.
  • Leadership, teamwork and communication skills. Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop medium and long-term promising research projects in the field of bacteriology, including projects involving the clinical activities of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Ability to develop an educational project in the field of veterinary bacteriology and animal bacterial diseases. The candidate will be expected to demonstrate a willingness to interact with clinic teaching staff.
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop scientific relationships and collaborations in the field of veterinary bacteriology, at national, European and international levels.
