As a member of the senior academic staff (Dutch: Zelfstandig Academisch Personeel, ZAP), you will contribute to the University of Antwerp’s three core tasks: education, research and services. Your role may also include organisational and managerial aspects.


  • You will provide high-quality education in the area of Clinical Neuroscience.
  • You will be involved in the teaching and coordination of courses and practicals related to Clinical and Translational Neuroscience in the Bachelor and/or Master Biomedical Sciences. You will function as teaching unit head or co-teacher of the following courses in the Master Biomedical Sciences: Integrated NS practicals (as teaching unit head for 3 ECTS, in English, Ma BMS NS); Translational NS (co-teaching for 4 ECTS, in English, elective subject Ma BMW/BMS) and Neurosciences (co-teaching for 4 ECTS, in Dutch, Ba3 BMW).
  • You will play a role in developing activating, student-centred and competence-driven programme components and study programmes.
  • You will supervise students and their Bachelor and Master dissertations.
  • Research

  • You will expand high-quality scientific research in the interdisciplinary domain of Clinical Neurology and Basic Neuroscience. The ideal candidate will use research techniques that include electrophysiology, neuroimaging, neurochemistry and/or neurogenetics to stimulate collaboration with other research groups within the Department.
  • You will initiate new lines of research and coordinate the progress of scientific research projects. You will also participate in ongoing research programmes.
  • You will acquire and manage national and international research funding.
  • You will publish in international journals and specialist literature.
  • You will develop an international scientific network.
  • You will supervise PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.
  • Services

  • You will play a role in the provision of both academic services and service to society, within the institution and externally. You provide service by disseminating research findings at national and international scientific conferences and you will participate in student recruitment, boards and committees and popular science communication, and so on.
  • Organisation and leadership

  • You will accept coordinating responsibilities in the areas of education, research and/or services and you will contribute to policy.
  • Profile

  • You hold a PhD in the (bio)medical sciences.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and . You have established an excellent research portfolio, and you perform impactful scientific research within the broader research context of Clinical Neuroscience.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s . You are motivated to develop your teaching skills further through the available.
  • If you do not speak Dutch, the administrative language of the university, you should be willing to obtain a CEFR B2 level of proficiency in Dutch. As soon as you take on teaching duties as a programme component coordinator, you should be able to demonstrate a CEFR C1 level of proficiency in the language of instruction.   • What we offer

  • We offer a part-time appointment as a member of the senior academic staff for a period of 3 years. Following a positive evaluation, the appointment can be renewed. The level of your appointment (lecturer, senior lecturer, professor or full professor) is determined on the basis of your professional experience and academic qualifications.
  • Your gross monthly salary is calculated according to the for senior academic staff (ZAP) and calculated proportionally on the basis of your employment percentage.
  • The planned start date is  1 May 2021 .
