Functieomschrijving Protection International (PI) is an international not-for-profit organisation registered in Belgium. In many parts of the world the defence of human rights evokes pressure, threats and attacks from state and non-state actors. PI works with local human rights movements to develop strategies and programmes that prevent and counter such pressure. It researches protection strategies and security management tools that protect human rights defenders, and shares its expertise in this area with people at risk due to their human rights work. PI tailors its approach to context and profile. Currently we work in South-East Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin-America, with presences in Thailand, Indonesia, Kenya, DR Congo, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras and Belgium.*******The Coordinator will provide leadership and vision on PI global advocacy efforts, setting direction, coordinating outreach and communications, informing decision-making and prioritisation of initiatives, ensuring the timely and effective implementation of priorities, inspiring and guiding a small, dedicated team.The purpose of the role is to drive an integrated approach to planning and implementation of advocacy that combines the expertise of policy influencing, advocacy, campaigning and communication in line with the objectives as set out in the 2019-23 Global Strategy of Protection International.The Coordinator will guide the Advocacy and Outreach Communication Unit (A&O) in Brussels, which combines advocacy and communications activities in one coordinated effort. As a member of the PI Global Team, the Coordinator will work under the direct supervision of the Executive Director, and in close collaboration with the Head of Policy Research and Training, and Regional Directors.Main Duties and Responsibilities: - Plan and coordinate PIs international advocacy and communication activities, and support the alignment, design and implementation of both advocacy and communication plans of the Global Team and Regional Hubs and country offices; - Provide leadership, strategic vision and guidance in terms of advocacy and outreach communications to the A&O Unit and to the rest of the Global Team, when needed; - Daily manage and supervise A&O staff and budget, as well as coordinate work plan implementation and reporting by the Advocacy and Outreach Communication Unit; - Proactively and powerfully represent PI in external fora and engage with external partners, as well as leading on the development and implementation of PI influencing strategies at the EU and UN level; - Keep abreast of the latest developments at EU and UN levels to ensure effective influencing of European and global targets by adapting PIs Global Advocacy Strategic Framework and messages; - Participate in capacity building and knowledge-sharing activities across the organisation, providing support to local and national advocacy actions in consultation with Country Representatives; - Creation and stewarding of new frameworks, procedures, standards and systems that are necessary to improve PI capacity to work at scale with strategic partners; - Be a reliable and proactive member of PI Global Team and build strong and productive relationships with other PI presences; - Undertake administrative and human resource management tasks as required by the position. Profiel Required qualifications and experience - Relevant academic background (international law, international relations, political sciences, communications, journalism among others); - Minimum 7 years professional experience in a similar position; - Proven experience working on human rights and with defenders at risk; - Proven record of accomplishment in multilateral advocacy at global and/or regional level on human rights-related issues; - Solid experience in conceiving and leading advocacy, policy, campaigning and communication strategies; - Programmatic and/or strategic communication experience preferably in countries where PI operates and in support to civil society organisations would be an asset; - Keen understanding of the EU institutions and its decision-making processes; - Proven track record in having established significant relationships with the EU institutions; - Experience in managing diverse team members and operate effectively within a diverse, international, multicultural, multilingual environment; - A passion and demonstrable commitment to human rights, gender equality and inclusion, as well as the role of human rights defenders as agents of change.Skills and Knowledge: - Excellent knowledge of the international human rights system as well as regional and national mechanisms for the protection of human rights defenders; - Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and working proficiency in Spanish and/or French are required. Being able to communicate professionally in all three languages would be a strong asset; - A proven ability to plan and communicate strategically; - Strong negotiation skil
