Renewed Perception

Renewed Perception

This week I was honored to attend an interesting mindfulness workshop provided by Patrick Poedts. It was a beautiful experience. In every way. Not only because of the gift, expertise and life experience of Patrick to make us feel at ease, and to transfer wisdom to us, but also because of how the group members interacted and connected with each other by being brave, open and honest about what was going on in their hearts and minds. We never met before and still there was an immediate climate that everything could be shared.

It is true that we tend to build stories about people when we see them for the first time. We all do it and then unlearn it when we move through our lives. This week I learned how each human being has a story to tell. A touching story that can be so different from what we would expect at first glance. Suddenly a man caught our attention. He told us - in a sort of cry for help - that he suffered from over-thinking, restlessness. He expressed his need to feel an "empty" mind. He was looking for mind-emptiness instead of mind-fulness. What is in a name?

He is not the only one with this issue. More and more we hear that people suffer from depression and burnout. People are put under pressure. A societal phenomen. The list of to do's has become long and neverending. We must work, raise our children, be there for our partner, build our house, etc. All at the same time. When we are involved in one activity, we are already thinking about how we will proceed with another activity. No time to rest, to sleep or to find a moment for ourselves. The clock ticks and we are running out of time.

To escape the rat race, practices as self-expression through painting, yoga, meditation, mindfulness (mindemptiness!) are just some supportive ways to find bliss and reconnect with ourselves. It seems that everyone is on the same journey to restore inner well-being. A peaceful and happy state, once discovered as a child but maybe lost since we became a young adult. Everyone comes from a different place, but we all meet there where we are courageous enough to admit that things have to change. We have the right to be human just as we are. In our own skin.

Patrick gave us an exercise in which we received - our eyes were closed - an unknown object (a cranberry) in our hands. We had to guess via our senses what it was. An enriching moment. Once we opened our eyes, we were surprised to find out how the object was described based on our senses. Would we have been asked to guess the object via the description of these qualities we would never have been able to come up with the object as such. Something to reflect upon. The way we consciously experience life through our senses adds a warm layer of wonder to it all.

In this regard a group member told us about her experience with Neuhaus pralines. Attached to the box of chocolates was a booklet with guidelines how to taste the product to enjoy the experience to the fullest. At first she was a bit reluctant to apply the guidelines but then something wonderful happened. She forgot everything and felt like in a cinema. The Neuhaus praline became the star of the moment and every single detail was taken into consideration through all her five senses. While she was describing her unique experience, we all felt how we were in a joyful mood to live the same experience.

What if we would be mindful in all what we do? Wouldn't that be delight-ful? Is that the art of life? Let's take off and renew our perception!

Thank you Ken Boddie buzz to my attention. I appreciate your writing about your experience Liesbeth and most importantly, about your insight into your learning: "This week I learned how each human being has a story to tell. A touching story that can be so different from what we would expect at first glance." A true call to action to be mindful and open to each individual being as unique as their story, one that we need to wait to hear first, before we make up our own about them.

, thank you for your comments and question. Belgium is my home country, it is a great place with wonderful regions and people, good points and less attractive ones, as everywhere. What currently keeps me here, is my close family. On the other hand as I spend 9 years abroad a part of me would love to continue my career in an English speaking environment. The future is in the making.

Another lovely piece of writing, Liesbeth. You know that old saying about not being able to judge a book by its cover. So what's YOUR story? What's it like living in Belgium with all of its international prestige?

Well written, LIesbeth, and thanks so much for sharing your positive and enlightening experience. Aptly chosen picture, which indicates metaphorically how we can easily rise above the clouds of gloom and negativity, especially when supported by our beBee community. including Lisa \ud83d\udc1d Gallagher.
