Who Cares?

Who Cares?

I was on the train this morning and expressed my concern about China and how the Corona Virus affects people there. I feel bad about what they have to go through. Another passenger instantly let me know that he did not want to hear about it and basically told me to shut up. I did not mention victims of wars that week, so why mentioning the horror that is going on in China. I had no right to care? He did not want to hear a word about it. 'Why do you care?' is what I heard.

What if the virus would have started in our country and affected our citizens,  maybe family and friends. Do we have the right to care in that case? What about the human aspect? Human suffering is sad and why is being compassionate a bad thing? It is easy to think that it might never harm you. The fact that one life is damaged or affected is a sad story as such. Countries are similar in one aspect: people live together. If their peace is at stake, our peace is at stake.

Caring is not a bad thing, and if some might think it is stupid, why not consciously create a pirus -  p(ositive v)irus - that makes us all more compassionate. More loving, with more empathy to the pain others are going through. Or should we leave everyone as he or she is, and be content that human kindness is still available as a precious treasure? Judging others does not help us to move forward.

I am so sorry, Chinese citizens, for the fact that many of your families are impacted by the virus. Sorry about the losses and illnesses. I am so sorry that it influences the way people are perceived, how it blocks the economy. I do not know you in person, but still honestly I can relate to your pain. I am happy that I am aware that we can all make a difference. It does not take much. Let us all do our share and care in our own way. Caring is not a weakness, it is the strength of a human. It makes us more human.

Mohammed Abdul Jawad @Jerry Fletcher makes a good point "overwhelmed" ... is a prevailing wind (and a strategy of the "god of this age") Who has time for caring? Many people have become disconnected from their own heart (cold hearts are dark hearts) Empathy is intentional ... we have to have eyes to see and a heart to care Human nature is the same no matter where you call home ... and so is "caring" A right response is always right ... even "virtuous" Same lack of caring: people can walk by a person begging/close their eyes to this hardship

Caring others, after all, is a virtuous act.

Well said, Liesbeth. There, but for the grace of whatever your deity of choice may be, goes you or I. We live in a Small and changing world where sympathy and empathy still cost nothing, and where exclusion, whether physical, mental or spiritual, is a bad investment. What goes around comes around.

It is unfortunate that people deal in fear and ignorance rather than get out of the small space they call their world. People take no time to study how many deaths flu causes in their own nation, and usually the numbers emanating from Wuhan region are small compared to that. It is good to know what is happening but not if we remain ignorant about what is really happening.

Liesbeth, Your tale is disheartening but it reflects the sad state of life on the planet these days. The only word that seems to be adequate to describe our citizenry is overwhelmed. They are so concentrated on making it through the day they have no spare brain cells for empathy. And so it goes.
