We are looking for a highly motivated Programme Manager to join our Environmental Transparency team to support our work on green claims and greenwashing.

In this role, you will develop our strategy and lead our advocacy on private ecolabels and voluntary certification schemes.


Private ecolabels and certification schemes are guidelines and criteria set by market actors to demonstrate their commitment to good environmental and social practices.

They are used in all sectors, like food, têxtiles, packaging, or even the mining industry. Some of the better-known voluntary standards include Oeko-tex, Rainforest Alliance, Forest Stewardship Council, or ISCC. The proliferation of these private claims with little scrutiny has led to numerous greenwashing scandals in recent years.


About ECOS:

ECOS is an international NGO with a network of members and experts advocating for environmentally friendly standards, policies and laws.

We ensure the environmental voice is heard when they are developed and drive change by providing expertise to policymakers and industry players, leading to the implementation of strong environmental principles.

Our successesinclude securing a ban on new fossil fuel boilers, mainstreaming ecodesign, introducing universal chargers, and improving our right to repair.

ECOS is headquartered in Brussels and has an exceptional team of over 35 staff supported by a network of over 50 technical experts and almost 60 member organisations.


Your main tasks will be to:

  • Shape and implement ECOS strategy to transform the use of private sustainability certifications
  • Create impactful positions on the right use and governance of these private claims, targeting decision makers, certification schemes boards, and stakeholders
  • Drive the implementation of a Horizon project looking at the robustness of certification schemes for biobased products
  • Create impactful communications content for ECOS including articles, opinion pieces, and publications, in cooperation with the Communications Department
  • Represent ECOS in relevant meetings, such as meetings of standardisation organisations or European institutions, UN fora, and workshops, conferences and other platforms
  • Actively strengthen cooperation with ECOS networks including member organisations, other NGOs, campaigns, certification & sustainability schemes, companies and relevant stakeholders

Skills and experience required:


  • Relevant professional experience, preferably with international NGOs, institutions, consultancies, or companies working in the environmental field
  • Commitment to the values, vision and mission of environmental NGOs
  • Strong analytical skills, demonstrated experience in research, drafting of policy papers, & ability to translate technical content into relatable information
  • Exposure to the development of private environmental claims is an asset Knowledge of issues around communication to consumers is an asset
  • Excellent time and project management skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent writing, communication, networking and negotiation skills
  • Fluent English, other languages an asset
