The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) has been active in DRC since more than 20 years and is involved in capacity building projects to improve research in public health, clinical sciences, and biomedical sciences.

Through longstanding partnerships with Congolese institutions, ITM was involved in research activities related to the emerging infectious diseases, like Ebola, mpox and neglected tropical diseases like sleeping sickness.


ITM has been reinforcing its presence in DRC since 2020 with the establishment of an ITM DRC office, including a team of scientists.


Your role:


The mission of the Clinical Expert is mainly to supervise and facilitate the implementation of clinical research projects supported by ITM in collaboration with two partner institutions: Centre de Recherche en Santé de Kimpese (CRSK) and Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale (INRB).


  • You develop, support and evaluate technological and/or scientific activities within ITM/ with clinical research partners to provide methods, techniques and processes for scientific activities: with main focus on emerging infectious diseases including the research on clinical management of fever in DRC
  • You coordinate and support scientific research, project(s) and/or programme(s) related to various clinical research projects to achieve the objectives within the agreed timelines and budget.
  • You report on scientific and technological results to make scientific knowledge and insights available to peers and scientists and receive feedback.
  • You organise training, mentoring and coaching of fellows and staff from partner institutions in DRC to achieve learning objectives, support, and optimize the performance of activities.
  • You stay up to date with evolutions in the area of tropical diseases in Africa to support ongoing projects and transform them into viable initiatives for the benefit of the ITG/partners. Read up on other clinical topics according to needs within specific projects.
  • You report directly to the ITM DRC country representative for management issues and to the Senior Scientist(s) involved in DRC and Project promotors (based at ITM, Antwerp) for content issues.
  • You liaise between project supervisors in ITM DRC, ITM Antwerp and partner institutions
  • You are responsible for organising all health linked issues (firstaid logistics and actions, health procedures, sanitary evacuation,. ) for the expats within the DRC office
  • You will be based in DRC, Kinshasa, with travel to Kimpese and Goma as needed

Your profile:


  • You are an MD
  • You have strong conceptual and organisational skills.
  • You preferably have working experience in Central and/or Southern Africa, working experience in DRC will be an asset.
  • You speak and write fluently French (mandatory) and English; knowledge of Dutch is an asset.
  • You work independently but are a good team player
  • You have the ability and willingness to work in DRC.
  • You have excellent organization skills.
