Over Wassim Zahr:

I’m excited about the opportunity to apply for the role at your company.

My first real embedded systems experience came during my internship at Indurad, a company specializing in radar solutions for the mining industry. There, I was given an ideal challenge: writing the entire firmware for a radar sensor from the ground up using Zephyr RTOS. To accomplish this, I first needed to understand the full system behavior. I analyzed the existing firmware, studied the device’s hardware schematics, and transitioned the data transmission protocol from CAN to Ethernet using a TCP/IP server. I then implemented a company-specific communication protocol for device control. One of the biggest technical challenges I faced was optimizing buffer management for sending raw data efficiently. To address this, I leveraged Zephyr’s multi-threading capabilities and semaphores. Using Python scripts, I analyzed the data via Fourier transforms to extract velocity information, which I validated through testing with a linear motor unit. Additionally, I wrote a driver for an IMU sensor and configured the device tree for a new hardware revision.

The firmware was maintained using GitLab CI/CD and supported remote updates via an HTTP server and MCUBoot. Debugging and programming were done using ST-Link and the OpenOCD framework. I carried out all development tasks on a Linux desktop, frequently using terminal commands and Bash scripts. I am highly proficient in Git for version control and have hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines. After finishing my master’s thesis on Explainable AI in automated vehicles, my supervisor and I published a paper in an international conference.

I had the opportunity to join SEGGER Microcontroller, a global leader in embedded development tools. My role focused on developing flash programming algorithms for the Flasher PRO product, specifically adding support for an automotive Renesas MCU family} and a Texas Instruments DSP. This role gave me the invaluable opportunity to work closely with Thomas Neumann, an engineer with over 25 years of experience at leading electronics companies.

I have recently dedicated significant time to deepening my knowledge with key modern tools and technologies in the embedded systems field, focusing particularly on Yocto, TensorFlow Lite, and FPGAs.
Beyond my passion for computer engineering, I have a deep interest in quantum mechanics and metaphysics, particularly in the pursuit of understanding the fundamental nature of reality.

Having studied and worked in Germany, I am now keen to establish myself professionally in Belgium, primarily to join my fiancée who resides in Brussels. I have always appreciated the country’s vibrant and dynamic atmosphere. Currently, I live in Brussels and am flexible about commuting to nearby cities. I'd love to work on diverse projects to develop as many skills as possible.

Thank you very much for considering my application.

Ervaring

I have solid experience in embedded systems development across various industries. At Indurad GmbH, I designed and implemented complete firmware for radar sensors using Zephyr RTOS. This included analyzing hardware schematics, transitioning data transmission from CAN to Ethernet with a TCP/IP server, writing drivers for sensors, applying DSP algorithms for signal analysis, and enabling secure remote updates with MCUBoot. Later, at SEGGER Microcontroller, I developed and optimized flash programming algorithms for Renesas and Texas Instruments devices, contributed to a Saleae high-level analyzer, and provided customer support, all while working closely with a senior embedded engineer. Additionally, during my academic career, I contributed to research projects and published in the field of Explainable AI.

Opleiding

I hold a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, and Computer Engineering from RWTH Aachen, where I graduated with a final grade of 1.8. My thesis focused on developing a Python GUI to visualize features in Transformer-based 3D object detection for automated driving, which resulted in a publication at an international conference. Before that, I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Bologna with a final grade of 109/110. My bachelor’s thesis involved a detailed power consumption analysis of a Nordic nRF chip using NB-IoT technology for structural health monitoring.
