Together with the university advisor, you will have the opportunity to define your own research trajectory in the field of Real-Time Operating Systems to contribute to the academic discourse in this field.


This position will require you to publish findings in proceedings and/or peer-reviewed journals and to showcase research outputs at conferences and workshops, leading eventually to the defense of a PhD dissertation.

What you will do

As a PhD researcher, you will:

  • Develop a bespoke, lightweight, and reliable RTOS, tailored for the unique hardware and software demands of the SAFEBOT system. The operating system will be based on an ARM-based Real-Time Linux distribution, using technologies like Yocto, Buildroot, or Petalinux.
  • Engage in the integration of Board Support Package (BSP) and toolchains. Your work will ensure customizability and scalability, facilitating interfaces with various embedded systems, especially FPGAs.
  • Design and implement highperformance Realtime APIs and processing chains for proximity and data interpretation using languages such as C/C++ or Rust.
  • Participate in the integration of GPUaccelerated algorithms for parallel processing and performance optimization, contributing to advancements in realtime digital signal processing and filtering techniques.
  • Support the design and implementation of objecttracking systems and 3D geometrical reconstructions software into the Real-Time Linux framework.
  • Implement kernellevel modifications and optimizations for improved realtime performance and hardware compatibility while ensuring the project adheres to design requirements, testing, verification, and validation standards.
  • Play an active role in knowledge dissemination within the robotics and computer science ecosystem.
What we do for you

  • Duration of the project: the initial duration of the PhD position is for 2 years. Upon successful completion of the first phase, funding for an additional 2 years is secured.
  • Start date: October 2023
  • Location: the PhD researcher will be hosted by a Belgian university. The project is affiliated with imec, Europe's largest independent research center in nanoelectronics and digital technologies. The SAFEBOT team operates from the imec facilities in Brussels (Bd de la Plaine 9).
Who you are

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience or interest in the field of RTOS, Linux, and Embedded systems.
  • Proficient programming skills in C/C++, MATLAB & Simulink.
  • Understanding of software design requirements, and experience with test verification, validation, and integration.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Yocto, Buildroot, or similar for building custom Linux distributions.
  • Experience with Real-Time operating systems such as Linux RT, Xenomai, FreeRTOS, VxWorks, or QNX is considered a plus.
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and agile development methodologies.
  • A critical thinker, adaptable, and with a strong sense of ownership.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate across groups.
  • Ability to independently manage time and balance the demands of multiple activities.
