Join us in creating the technology that helps the world act together
We are a B2B technology innovation leader pioneering the future where networks meet cloud.

At Nokia you will have a positive impact on people's lives and help build the capabilities needed for a more productive, sustainable, and accessible world.

Be part of a culture built on an inclusive way of working where we are open to your ideas, you are empowered to take risks and are encouraged to be fearless in bringing your authentic self to work.

With state-of-the-art software, hardware and services for any type of network, Nokia is uniquely positioned to help communication service providers, governments, and large enterprises deliver on the promise of 5G, the Cloud and the Internet of Things.

Serving customers in over 100 countries, our research scientists and engineers continue to invent and accelerate new technologies that will increasingly transform the way people and things communicate and connect.

The team you'll be part of

The Fixed Networks Division is one of the key divisions in Nokia focusing on making Ultra Broadband Access possible for all users in the world.

The fixed access product portfolio consists out of Fiber and Copper Access technology.

The internship project will be done within our HW R&D team located at the Antwerp site.

Our lab provides a workplace to design state-of the-art hardware boards but also continuously work on improving our test-environment and supporting lab management automation tools.

What you will learn and contribute to

Project introduction
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons are active devices (tags) with a battery and a Bluetooth chip inside. Every while the BLE tag sends a beacon radio signal with a unique ID. These tags are small and can last a few years before replacing the battery.

If the BLE tag is in the range of a Bluetooth receiver, the unique ID and signal strength can be used to track the beacon if the location of the Bluetooth receiver is known.

Project description

A raspberry-pi (RPI) will host a MQTT broker to receive these BLE tag info (ID and distance to the ESP32 module) and a webserver hosting a basic website to display the location of the BLE tag inside the building.

See figure 2 for an example of this website.

As part of our team, you will:

  • The BLE tags need to be attached to lab equipment to track their location. Inside the building several ESP32 modules need to be foreseen to track these. The location of the ESP32 modules need to be chosen carefully. A study on the available tags, price and radio disturbance inside the lab, needs to be done first.
  • The distance is calculated from the signal strength and is impacted by line of sight. A calibration needs to be in place to account for this. This can be done inside the ESPresence firmware.
  • The BLE tag info needs to be saved to a database on the RPI and converted to display on the website.

With this internship project:

  • You can get a 6 weeks experience in a stateoftheart hardware R&D team, being completely embedded in the day to day operation of this team. This is also the team that will provide support to make you successful in this internship.
  • Your focus will be on the investigation of a system to use BLE tags to monitor the location of equipment. The system will be defined by you in combination with the existing tools and engineers, who will be using it and maintain it.
  • No actual hardware will be made, but you get the opportunity to work in a hardware environment and define your vision on how BLE tags could help the team.

Your skills and experience
The internship experience is open for individuals or a team of maximum 2 students.

You have:

  • Basic understanding of hardware design aspects is preferred but not required.
  • Basic experience with databases and websites is required.
  • Basic experience with scripting languages is preferred.
  • Open for students that have at least a bachelor's degree in Electronics or Computer Science and currently enrolled in a master program.
