Job Purpose


The Senior Data Scientist in Microbiome and Disease contributes to investigating the role of the microbiome in human diseases to support the discovery, design, and development of therapeutic vaccines or drugs.

This role supports the microbiome strategy to advance vaccine projects across the R&D pipeline.

Provides innovative scientific leadership for _in silico_ microbial target or biomarker discovery, host-pathogen interactions and genomics of (non/)infectious diseases, which are of strategic importance to the global Vaccines R&D organization, and in particular to the Therapeutic Vaccines Scientific Area.


This role shall establish and maintain a productive network of collaborations -internally and externally to GSK- to enable and enhance the team objectives and strategy, foster the exchange of ideas and collaborations, and contributes to create an energizing and engaging working environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plans, manages and ensures that microbiomerelated scientific deliverables are at the top of research and industry standards.
  • Designs, develops and ensures implementation of pipelines and analytical models for microbiome data exploration, microbiomebased diagnostics, identification of biomarkers associated with health/disease, microbial genomics, metagenomics and similar areas.
  • Designs and implements microbiome genomics solutions to impact GSK's early pipeline by collaborating with key stakeholders.
  • Supports the discovery, preclinical and clinical stages of projects through data science activities for bacterial and therapeutic vaccines or drugs.
  • Advises on study design, readout selection and data analysis to stakeholders in other functions or departments across the company.
  • Presents the computational biology strategy and results at key internal GSK meetings, and fully represents GSK externally with academic partners, consultants and other external companies.
  • Support an inclusive, diverse and collaborative culture between lab scientists, data scientists, project leaders and tech collaborators, for example collaborating to scientific events, building networks and growing scientists' communities.

Qualifications:
We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Master, PhD or equivalent in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biostatistics, Microbiology, Genomics, Microbiome
  • 5+ years Research & Development or relevant scientific experience including 2+ years of project management responsibilities. Proven experience in leading scientific projects from design to completion.
  • Fluent in English (spoken and written).

Soft skills

  • Excellent in leading innovative crossfunctional initiatives from inception through to completion involving both multidisciplinary and geographically remote partners.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven record of collaborative work.
  • Exemplary written and oral communication skills and the ability to convey complex scientific messages across multidisciplinary functions in a simple and effective manner.
  • Good planning, prioritization and organizational skills.
  • Good influencing skills in their network and across the GSK organization at global level at least up to Senior Director roles.

Hard skills

  • Deep experience in microbiome data analysis, microbial genomics, advanced statistics and/or machine learning.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of the role of human microbiota in chronic diseases
  • Fluency in programming (any of R, Python, bash ) or usage of statistical software.
  • Strong business understanding of the pharmaceutical industry.
