Friends of Europe is a leading think tank based in Brussels, working to promote dialogue and shape policy on European and global affairs.

We are seeking a Press & Communications Officer to join our Communications Team and support our media outreach, engagement, and promotion activities.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?


As the Press & Communications Officer, your primary responsibilities will include liaising with journalists, writing press releases, generating interest in Friends of Europe's stories, events and publications, arranging for spokespeople to speak to the press, and monitoring media coverage.

Furthermore, you'll be leading the production of podcasts and contribute to the editorial team.

You will work collaboratively with other members of the Communications Team to balance press activities with the overall communications strategy, campaigns and plans.

As Press & Communications Officer, you will be responsible for:
Press (25%)

  • Drafting and sending press invitations and press releases, ensuring all communication adheres to Friends of Europe's house style.
  • Working with programme teams to ensure delivery and operation of press content where necessary.
  • Manage media correspondence with journalists and media outlets.
  • Liaise with media contacts to carry out interviews and other mediarelated activities.
  • Follow up with journalists after events, interviews and briefings.
  • Lead media outreach outsourcing if and when necessary.
  • Identify press lists for relevant events and publications.
  • Update the media lists as necessary for relevant programmes.
  • Organise media briefings.
  • Update the press section on Friends of Europe's website.
  • Pitch feature pieces to the media.
  • Contribute to communications plans with respect to press activities.
Media monitoring (25%)

  • Monitor media coverage of Friends of Europe and its organisation's key stakeholders.
  • Keeping abreast of the media environment in the Brussels policy areas.
  • Produce media monitoring statistics to be included in regular reports.
Podcast deliverables (30%)

  • Research topics, plan and coordinate the podcast(s) editorial calendar in line with Friends of Europe's areas of expertise, events, publications and campaigns.
  • Liaise with guests and hosts, as well as hosting some of the episodes.
  • Contribute to the audio editing of the episodes.
  • Select quotes from the episodes to be promoted on social media.
  • Conceptualise/help to conceptualise podcast series that could become relevant for the organisation.
  • Contribute to communications plans with respect to podcast activities.
Editorial deliverables (20%)

  • Supporting the editorial manager to meet editorial deadlines for Friends of Europe's key written activities, such as #CriticalThinking articles, Frankly Speaking opeds, event reports, and publications.
In this role, you will report to the Editorial Manager at Friends of Europe.

WHAT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS DO YOU NEED TO HAVE?

  • Relevant university degree or equivalent certificate in media relations
  • Research experience combined with good analytical skills
  • Demonstrable knowledge of and interest in European and global affairs
  • Good understanding of EU institutions and the Brussels bubble, including protocol and political sensitiveness
  • English as a mother tongue or equivalent level, any other EU languages is an asset
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, previous experience with Cision is a plus
  • Knowledge of media landscape in Europe with a focus on Brussels
  • Highlymotivated and wellorganised personality
  • Proactive working style
  • Ability to juggle different priorities and meet tight deadlines while maintaining strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a multicultural team and with minimum supervision
Flexibility when having to work at morning and evening events
