About the role:

This role is designed for an experienced legal professional to join ClientEarth's newly formed team working on Fundamental Rights and cooperate with other teams on the interaction between environmental degradation and violations of fundamental rights.

The focus of the role will be to use fundamental rights law and environmental law to protect human health, the environment and the climate.

This will involve both the implementation and enforcement of existing legislation and the development of new and innovative legal arguments, based on the fundamental rights framework.


Meet your Manager
In this role you will be managed by
Vesselina Newman, who is our Senior Lawyer, Fundamental Rights. Vesselina has practiced strategic human rights litigation for over twenty years. She has litigated cases in Europe and Africa before national and international courts.

At ClientEarth, Vesselina works at the cross-section of human rights and environmental law, where the climate and ecological crises affect fundamental rights, including the rights to life and to health.

She leads the Fundamental Rights team, which is part of ClientEarth's Just Societies group, and works with all teams at ClientEarth to develop an approach integrating the protection of the environment and human rights, since every day shows these to be ever more inextricably entwined.

Main Duties

  • Developing new robust legal arguments based on fundamental rights to tackle environmental degradation;
  • Identifying opportunities for targeted legal interventions and preparing them for launch, such as litigation before national courts or complaints to international and regional human rights fora;
  • Keeping uptodate on developments on the relationship between fundamental rights and the environment in Europe and beyond,and informing relevant colleagues. Anticipates trends

Role requirements

  • Law degree
  • Experience of litigation before the European Court of Human Rights
  • Fluent (CEFR level C2) in English
