Job Purpose:


The main purpose of the "Director, External R&D, Strategic Alliances" role is to manage the growing portfolio of Vx Alliances and, when needed, support identifying, evaluating and executing new Vx deals that support the R&D strategy.


  • S/he enables the execution of and ensures delivering value of his/he alliance portfolio (35 alliances).
  • S/he manages the interaction with external strategic partners and shares the global responsibility for execution and delivery of all projects in scope of the collaboration, in compliance with contractual terms.
  • S/he works in a crossfunctional matrix setting with linkages to the whole R&D global footprint.
  • S/he has visible accountabilities for collaborating closely with Business Owner(s)/Project Lead(s) to ensure that there is a robust framework for all projects within GSK and with the external collaborator.

Key
responsibilities:


  • Act as Primary Point of Contact for the Alliance (internally and with the Partner); Cultivate an effective working relationship and facilitate communications between Parties.
  • Work with Partner, Business Owner/Project Lead and other key internal stakeholders (e.g. BD, IP, Legal,..) to ensure achievement of mutual strategic objectives within the Alliance along with continuous value generation
  • Ensure the partnership operates within the Alliance framework:
  • Governance: Establish and execute overall Alliance governance and processes through collaborative dialogue within GSK and with the Partner; Assume responsibility for Joint Steering Committee (JSC) operations
  • Quality & Compliance: (i) Product (ii) Business Processes e.g. GxP (iii) Patient Safety and Pharmacovigilance. Assume responsibility for contractual compliance. Monitor and control the quality of the working relationship established as
per agreed quality standard, including Third Party oversight plan

  • Drive the creation of an integrated Alliance Program Plan (R&D, Manufacturing, Commercialization), with clear go/no go decision points and associated milestones; including scenario planning to maximize the value of the relationship
  • Work in collaboration with Partner, GSK Finance, Business Owner/Project Leads & Project Managers to define and seek endorsement of resources requirements and budget demand
  • Lead the identification of Alliance Program issues and risks and drive resolution or mitigation through a matrix environment, effectively documenting decisions/rationale; Ensure oversight of key Alliance Program Risks at JSC and with GSK senior management Manage Alliance Program performance: set performance measures and drive a performance dialogue. Proactively identify deviations vs. plan, suggesting resolution action and manage variances in accordance with the structured governance to resolve scope, quality, schedule, cost, risk or benefits impacts
  • Provide regular status updates for GSK's Senior Management and provide key information for management decisions
  • Contribute to Alliance Management best practices by sharing experience, and lessons learned (success & failure)
  • Partner closely with Business Owner and BD to develop and implement strategies to support GSK ambition and priorities; Assist in Business Development activities as required in support of the existing key relationship(s) and as appropriate for future partnering efforts, specifically with respect to how the deal will be operated (e.g. governance structure/decisionmaking, milestone reporting, payment schedules, development project planning, communications/publications,)
  • EHS:
  • Responsible for the compliance with the standards and policies
  • Ensure a cultural change in terms of safety and linked behaviors in the team

Basic Qualifications:


  • University Scientific Degree : General Science or Life/Health related Science Degree
  • Need of a robust scientific background and business skills to execute the job as well as excellent, communication and negotiation skills

Preferred:


  • Master or PhD degree in scientific and/or business discipline together with substantial pharmaceutical industry experience and with qualification in Project Management and/or Alliance Management
  • Areas of Specialization: Pharmacy, Chemistry, Engineer, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Project Management, Business School
- a strong scientific background combined with a good business profile and strong communication skills are preferred
