Research & development - Leuven | Just now- Assess the present and future environmental footprint of the semiconductor industry through in-depth analysis of IC packaging materials and manufacturing processes.- What you will doSustainability is one of the key challenges of our society, with critical situations in climate change, resources depletion and pollution.
In the last decades, environmental concerns played no role in the evolution of semiconductor technologies:it was governed by other factors focusing on the increase of performance, the reduction of power consumption, continuous area scaling and cost reduction.
Nevertheless, the surging demand of chips puts the electronics industry's environmental impact in the spotlight. To address this environmental gap, imec has created a sustainability program with two focal points:
The assessment of the environmental footprint of Integrated circuit fabrication and packaging, and the development of more sustainable manufacturing solutions.
We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to join us in growing this exciting and crucial program.Relying on the life-cycle assessment methodologies already developed in the research team, you will set up and conduct systematic in-depth evaluations of the environmental impact of present and future IC packaging technologies.
In a first step, you will expand the imec.netzero tool with models for IC packaging materials and manufacturing processes in order to quantify their carbon footprint, water and rare material usage.
Further down the line, you will identify and document actionable "hot spots" with high environmental impact and feed them into an electronics sustainability roadmap which will guide our efforts towards a more sustainable industry.
You will work in close collaboration with teams in imec working on packaging technologies, electronic circuit & system design, as well as interface with industrial partners and make sure these assessments are relevant for the industry.
Finally, you will report your results to the industry partners and the broader semiconductor community. What we do for you
