Beschrijving

The Department of Public Health of the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp (ITM) conducts public health research of international standing, delivers postgraduate education of high quality, and engages in service delivery to advance public health.

The department is organized into multidisciplinary research groups, including public health specialists, epidemiologists, and social scientists.

Within the Department of Public Health, the
Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) group aims to contribute to the improvement of sexual, reproductive, and maternal health of populations primarily (but not only) in low resource settings, by collaborations in innovative research, advanced education, policy support and capacity-strengthening.

We use quantitative, qualitative and mixed method inter-disciplinary approaches (e.g. epidemiology, sociology, anthropology, psychology, demography) to understand risks and vulnerability as an evidence base towards improving outcomes.

The SRH Group has two units: the HIV and Sexual Health unit and the Maternal and Reproductive Health unit.

The research and education portfolio of the Group focuses on understanding drivers of poor SRH, strengthening resilience and mitigating the impact of adverse events on SRH, particularly among populations in vulnerable situations.

Current research includes, for example, optimising the implementation of PrEP among priority populations in Belgium and Burkina Faso, and quality of healthcare for pregnant and postpartum women in urban settings.

The SRH Group plans to strengthen research related to children and adolescents, as priority populations vulnerable to adverse SRH outcomes, and to strengthen early-life health through optimizing maternal and perinatal care.

Within our dynamic and interdisciplinary Group, there is an exciting opportunity for a senior researcher to establish and lead complementary research and teaching portfolio in the field of
Child and Adolescent Health.

This role entails
strengthening and expanding the Group's and Department's research agenda in this field, as well as contributing to training and scientific capacity strengthening.

  • Lifecourse approaches to child and adolescent health, including nutrition, lifestyle, infections, noncommunicable diseases, and fertility.

  • Determinants of health and vulnerability (urbanization, gender, climate change).
