Short-term Power as a Service'
(BP SPaaS) is to deliver services and value for clients on the Short Term Power markets, through strong business expertise and a competitive digital experience.
The
French A
sset O
ptimization team within BP SpaaS is servicing 3 internal customers:

  • La Société Hydro-Electrique du Midi (SHEM) for who we are optimizing from 3 year ahead until the intraday horizon 750 MW in 9 valleys
  • Flex GEN for who we are optimizing on the day ahead market 5 CCGT for a total of 1.7 GW
  • RGBU for who we are optimizing a virtual hydro plant in Switzerland
We are currently looking for a
French Power Asset
Optimizer in Brussels.

The mission of the optimizer will be a rich mix of
operational activities performed in shift* (accounting for half of the workload) and
projects shared between the different team members, such as automation/improvement of tools and processes, methodological improvements, support to valuation/pricing of new contracts/acquisitions.


  • A shift is either an early morning shift (7 days, including weekend) or a late morning shift with an oncall disponibility during the night (5 week days).

Role:

As a French Power Asset Optimizer, your role will be to


1) Forecast, optimize and hedge the asset production of
French
power plants (hydro + thermal) on different markets (50%), i

e:

  • Have a deep understanding of the assets and their specificities; make sure they are properly modelled
  • Perform short to medium term optimisation (from day ahead to 3 years ahead)
  • Send production plans to the physical dispatch teams
  • Ensure continuous communication to and from physical dispatch teams
  • Define the bidding strategies on the power exchanges to make an optimal day ahead planning ensuring a physical balance
  • Define, propose and have validate the risk management mandate for the assets
  • Within this mandate, define hedging strategies in collaboration with Trading and execute optimization strategies in collaboration with Trading, Origination and Dispatch
  • Ensure at all times to capture the positions, understanding of P&L and appropriate reporting
  • Respect contractual, regulatory and compliance framework in order to avoid any penalties
  • On top of the power management, the team is also responsible for the gas and emissions purchase on the thermal side and for the GoO and capacity certificates on the hydro side.

2)
Contribute to projects (50%) around:


  • The design and development of innovative solutions for hydro and thermal management (optimisation tools, stochastic modelling, bidding strategies definition, hydro and inflow modelling, risk management through options, etc.)
  • Support to revision planning or other hydro valuations
  • Participate to projects related to development of hydro activities, internal to Engie or external, including commercial or business development
  • The harmonisation, convergence, automation of activities in GEMS (Short Term Power, Origination, etc.)
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the optimization framework
  • The training/coaching of trainees or junior optimisers as well as physical dispatchers in SHEM

Education and professional background:

  • Master's degree in quantitative discipline (Engineering, computer science, physics, finance, etc.)
  • A structured and analytical personality with a handson and positive attitude
  • Good understanding of energy markets
  • Proficiency with IT tools
  • Ability to take initiatives and to operate in a demanding and fast changing environment
