Job Purpose and Impact:


The Patent Scientist Lead Edible Oils will create and develop dedicated and skilled global expertise and resources to decrease lag in moving from innovation to strategic patent filings, increase the quality and scope of the company ́s intellectual property filings and reduce costs through the use of active portfolio management.

In this role, you will work collaboratively with essential partners and drive inventor engagement in intellectual property creation and patent processes.

You will be part of the R&D organisation, situated to work closely with the Edible Oils Product and Process Development (PPD) team, with the customer facing R&D organization and with the Patent Attorneys.

You will participate in strategic category teams for Innovate & Grow and Core Edible Oils and will be part of multidisciplinary innovation projects to lead from the intellectual property perspective.


Key Accountabilities:


  • Lead and facilitate applicable strategic discussions for invention identification, generation of invention disclosures and drive a purposeful invention disclosures funnel including proactive invention mining.
  • Drive and support the rigor of inventions and experimental designs to improve the scope of claims globally.
  • Facilitate decisions with legal for trade secrets versus patent for innovations, provide support to access cited prior art coming out of patent office responses, compliance with geographical duty of disclosure requirements and decipher which global patent families support which product families.
  • Partner with the intellectual property law department to conduct searches directed to patentability and freedom to operate.
  • Maintain a strong lab presence, drive desired methodology and provide timely and relevant training on global intellectual property and patent considerations in conjunction with the intellectual property law department.
  • Serve as a technical expert to assist in understanding of prior art, state of field and translation between the company drafts and the broader field.
  • Provide expert thought leadership in your field and work with limited direction, using additional research and interpretation to identify issues or problems.
  • Provide direction and coaching to more junior team member (patent scientist) and be a strategic contributor.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience, such as Food Science and Technology, Chemistry
  • Minimum of six years of related work experience
  • Experience with working in an R&D environment
  • Demonstrated experience with the process of patent filing, claim interpretation and freedomtooperate assessment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or other postsecondary degree
  • Confirmed ability to assess and handle risk in collaboration with the legal team
  • Experience with invention identification, patent filing strategy and patent portfolio management
  • Experience with positioning of science and intellectual property towards a commercial business environment
