- and space

Within Space Applications Services the position is in the
Services Department, Training & Operations Team.

Location: ESA ESEC Center in Libin/Redu, Belgium (Hybrid)


Tasks and Responsibilities:


The major tasks will revolve around providing high quality support for the successful delivery of ESA Academy's Experiment programme (known today as "PETRI", and building on the former 'Spin Your Thesis', 'Drop Your Thesis', 'Fly Your Thesis' and 'Orbit Your Thesis' programmes) in the "_Experiments_" activity set.

The Experiments Programme provides university students with an educational experience spanning the development of an idea all the way through to the execution of the experiment or technological demonstration.

The process guides students through the various phases and reviews with the support of professional engineers and scientists.

The assigned tasks will help university student teams in all aspects of their project culminating in development of hardware for multiple platforms including, but not limited to:

  • Large Diameter Centrifuge (ESA/ESTEC, The Netherlands)
  • Orbital Robotics Laboratory (ESA/ESTEC, The Netherlands)
  • ZARM Drop Towers in Bremen University (Bremen, Germany)
  • Novespace's AirZeroG parabolic aircraft (Merignac, France)
  • ICE Cubes Facility on the International Space Station (LEO platform)
  • Space Rider System (LEO platform)
The tasks and responsibilities will cover all phases of the experiment programme, including:

  • Overall schedule of the various programme elements, in collaboration with all ESA directorates and partners organizations
  • Monitor the progress of the students' projects and assist with various ESAprovided activities, facilities or partner activities/facilities.
  • Coordinate engineering, communication and business support to the students teams.
The tasks further include the support to the thematic alignment of various ESA Academy activity sets, enabling the synergetic use of learning modules across classroom learning / e
- learning, hands-on projects, and engagement opportunities.


Skills and Experience:


  • University degree (at least at MSc level) in Engineering, scientific or business domain
  • Knowledge of the European academic landscape as well as the space sector (institutional, commercial and/or industrial)
  • At least 3 years of professional experience
  • Experience in Project Management with the ability to effectively:
  • Coordinate work contributions from several different parties
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders (ESA, the involved international partners, industry, academia and students).
  • Ability to:
  • Synthesise, summarise and draw conclusions
  • Adhere to strict standards of confidentiality
  • Work in distributed international teams
  • Work independently
  • Strength to cope with schedules and deadlines
  • Excellent organisational, reporting, and communication skills, including in giving effective presentations
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
