CONTEXT
The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) is one of Belgium's leading institutes for training and research in tropical medicine.

It is organized in three departments:
public health, clinical sciences and biomedical sciences.

The ITM delivers outpatient, clinical and preventive services in infectious diseases, including tropical and sexually-transmitted diseases and is regularly collaborating with Sciensano and Departement Zorg to improve clinical care, diagnostics and public health in Belgium.

ITM strives for the advancement of science and health for all, through innovative research, advanced education, professional medical services and capacity sharing.

It has a strong interdepartmental and interdisciplinary capacity to study and understand infectious epidemics and drug resistance of tropical origin.

In collaboration with Department Zorg (Care) and Sciensano, ITM is launching a new 16-month long study on scabies in Flanders.

Scabies is a contagious and severely itchy skin condition caused by a microscopic mite.

Scabies infestations have been increasing in Belgium over the past 10 years in the general population, in men and women of all ages, especially 15-25 years-old.

In Flanders, the increase in incidence of scabies has additionally mostly been seen in large cities.

It is so far unknown whether a large part of this increase is due to therapy failure, re-infections and/or other factors.

This study aims to measure the number of scabies presentations to outpatient care and estimate the extent of scabies' therapy failure and re-infections in Flanders, as well as to improve our understanding of scabies-specific care seeking behaviours and care giving behaviours.

Working with physicians and scabies patients in four cities in Flanders (Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges and Leuven) the study team will collect information using surveys and in-depth interviews.

The results from this study will in turn support Department Zorg in targeting measures to reduce the burden of scabies in Flanders.

ITM is looking to hire a coordinator to support the study over the period of 1 year.

Most of the work is being conducted at ITM, Antwerp, Belgium, but staff must be prepared to travel within Belgium.

The project coordinator will work primarily within the multidisciplinary team at ITM (clinical, epidemiological, entomological and social science).
