ShareAction and the global system of finance

The global investment system has an oversized impact on many of the existential challenges we face today. Investors, as holders of capital and owners of the companies they invest in, have an influence on corporate practice.

They influence which companies find it easier or harder to access finance and can influence the companies they're invested in.

Through their investment decisions and company engagement, investors can support a transition to a more sustainable, healthier way of living - this is known as responsible investment.

ShareAction's vision is a world where the financial system better serves our planet and its people.

Our mission is to define the highest standards of responsible investment and to drive change until these standards are adopted worldwide.

We work towards our mission by:

  • Building networks and coalitions of allies to drive change from within and outside the financial system
  • Advocating for change in the investment industry using our research and rankings
  • Campaigning with allies to strengthen investor stewardship and improve corporate practice
  • Pushing for public policy reform to transform the financial system
Position

We are looking to appoint an EU Senior Policy Research Officer into our policy advocacy team to support the advocacy activities of ShareAction and the European Responsible Investment Network (ERIN), a network of European civil society organisations, for which ShareAction provides the secretariat.

In this role you will produce policy research that helps us advocate for strengthened rules and regulations that govern the financial sector to build an economy that is good for people and the planet.

Policy advocacy is an important part of the work we do to make the financial sector more sustainable.

We have been advocating for changes in sustainable finance policy in Europe for a number of years and we have had a small team in Brussels since 2017.

Although the role will be varied and open to some change in the activities you will undertake, below are the types of activities that you can expect to do:

  • Conduct and lead research on (the effectiveness) of sustainable finance rules;
  • Work closely with ShareAction colleagues and the European Responsible Investment Network to identify research opportunities and to inform and educate network members about research findings;
  • Support the advocacy work with ad hoc research, and feed into the preparation of policy briefings and consultations;
  • Support wider ShareAction teams with policyrelated input as needed;
  • Support the team to engage with policymakers, civil society, and the investment industry in order to disseminate and present our positions;
  • Work closely with our internal communications team to coordinate press and social media around publications.

There are other opportunities and activities to get involved in and we will support your knowledge on a wide range of topics and ability to gain specific knowledge where you desire.

  • An understanding of the EU policymaking process/how laws are made;
  • You'll have an ability to write about complex topics in a direct and understandable manner;
  • Excellent communication skills, in both written and spoken English;
  • An understanding and interest in ShareAction's mission and work;
  • Proven capacity to undertake varied tasks simultaneously and to tight deadlines;
  • Organised and selfdirected on work initiatives with a strong attention to detail;
  • Strong commitment to collaborative working.
Desirable

  • Experience in a work setting focussed on influencing European policy on sustainability (this may have had an environmental focus and/or a human/labour rights focus or otherwise);
  • Knowledge of financial markets and/or sustainable finance;
  • Experience of working or campaigning on responsible/sustainable investment issues, whether in the private sector or in the third sector;
  • Familiarity with the policy debates around environmental and/or human rights issues;
