The World As We Know It

The World As We Know It

The power of intuition can go a long way and we can trust it. Recently I held a conversation for professional purposes with a senior manager. She gave me an example of how the department 'had' to work according to 'her rules'. An awkward feeling reached me. Although she used the 'right words'. Positive keys that should announce positive outcomes. However, I was warned by some alert. There was more to this than at first (blind) sight.

The senior manager seemed to have everything under control. The whole department was following 'her' instructions. What a success. Really? Nobody dared to express their own feelings and thoughts. They were afraid of her dominating power. It was nothing more than an illusion. The human factor which is the key to truly thriving work environments, had become redundant. Congratulations, senior manager for what you have achieved. Be proud of that status quo.

It is sad when the voice of the individual does not count anymore. We are all unique beings and whatever our background, role, function or experience, we all have something to contribute to the whole of who we are as a group. Maybe it is time to get rid of all professional behaviors that result in extinguishing the pure flame within people. We can all be on fire when we touch the best in our colleagues, family members of friends.

Let us honor each other more and really represent powerful values as respect, openness and honesty. Not to hide a true control system behind it all to have everyone in line and disempowered, but come on, let us really make a difference instead of putting up a show. The world as we know it, is full of infinite choices. Let us commit to being the best and bringing the best out of everyone we touch. Give your voice more power and dare to express who you really are.

Proma \ud83d\udc1d Nautiyal I see your point, and a lot of people must naturally lean towards your thinking and feeling. But not everyone has the guts to walk their own truth. They sacrifice their individuality. What a loss.

Powerful buzz, Liesbeth Leyson. This type of attitude generally stems from insecurities where the person needs to pound on the fact of how important they are and how indispensable their rules are. I completely agree with Chris Guest on this point. Unfortunately, this is seen a lot in corporate structures, one of the reasons why I find it impossible to work in a "so called" formal environment.

Well said CityVP \ud83d\udc1d Manjit consider yourself among the brave ones. What a treasure is wasted, when power comes into play. In such cases, nobody wins on the longer term.

Unfortunately global membership of the Control Freaks Association is far more dominant and this need for human beings to exert power over others, which to me is a form of bullying if the rules are absolute, is an unfortunate aspect of tribal behaviour. I have the luxury of being able to walk when these behaviours are in display because I do not have enough patience or accommodation for truly controlling environments.

Interesting post These circumstances are unfortunate although I believe them to be temporary in that it is not sustainable for anyone, most especially the company/business. it is good to see that your "intuition" is still working; right?

Liesbeth, I was hoping for one of your fictions but this is just as exciting. Your observations connect to a book I was reading in flight last weekend: "The Medici Effect" by Frans Johansson. Essentially, innovation requires diversity of people and the intersection of industries or areas of study. The manager/dictator you describe will never deliver positive change in people, principles or products/services. And so it goes.

exactly, to the outside world wonderful values are being presented but it is sad that in the internal body of businesses nothing is further from those values, this cannot be healthy on the longer term, well said Pascal Derrien

Herd mentality when imposed or received is a great imposture , carrying a mask is probably easier than saying NO I wont do that. Many corporations sell diversity and inclusion when internally anybody who dares deviating from the party line is singled out, so much demagoguery per square meter in those big C than even the dodgiest real estate agent would prefer working for a charity :-)

Zacharias \ud83d\udc1d Voulgaris I am confident and satisfied that there still exist people who dare to look through things. Thank you for your valuable contribution here on this topic, very much appreciated!

I've experienced situations like this before. I believe the term for this sort of sterile and overly tidy way of running things is "group think" and it's one of the most uncreative ways to deal with people. Without diversity of views and the insights that stem from the synthesis of the most promising views, it's really hard to solve the complex problems that a modern organization has to face. Thanks for the insightful post...

Great buzz dear and s9o shared it. I agree with you "It is sad when the voice of the individual does not count anymore. We are all unique beings and whatever our background, role, function or experience, we all have something to contribute to the whole of who we are as a group". Only in simple and complicated systems we may apply some control, but not in complex human relationship. The manager tries to control the uncontrollable and this is self-defeating.
