We are looking for an
Upstream Associate Scientist who is
flexible and
multi-tasking to join us in our
Biologics DS Process Sciences department, based in
Braine-l'Alleud,
Belgium

About the role


The Associate Scientist within the Upstream Process Sciences Group will be involved in activities relating to the early-stage process development and late-stage process optimization, transfer and clinical/commercial manufacturing support for upstream processes to produce protein therapeutics.

They will aid in process development and optimization, process troubleshooting, investigations, characterization. They will evaluate cellular responses to process operations, assess their effects on product quality, and determine the process scalability.


The Associate Scientist may occasionally travel to other locations such as different UCB sites and external partners' facilities as part of their activities for UCB.

They may also attend scientific events and trainings hosted in various locations worldwide.

  • Bassem Ben Yahia, your manager.
  • The Associate Scientist will work in a team environment, collaborating with various Process and Analytical Scientists, which requires good interpersonal skills in order to communicate and maintain fruitful working relationships with colleagues across departments and geographies, as well as external partners.

What you'll do:


  • Perform upstream process development experiments with minimum supervision.
  • Plan their own work with the team members involved in the experiment, proactively collecting feedback on their proposed plan with the project leader and team members and executing such plan.
  • Generate documentation for experimental reports to support technology transfer and regulatory filings.
  • Provide feedback and discuss with inprocess analytics colleagues and Analytical Development Sciences for Biologics (ADSB) colleagues regarding analytical methods. They will use automation and high throughput technologies for sample preparation and/or analysis.
  • Comply with UCB's Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) policies and standards, and actively participate in their enforcement and improvement to ensure the safety of themselves, others and of UCB's assets at all times.
The Associate Scientist will spend up to 80% of their time in the laboratory performing experimentation on cell culture and media formulations with bioreactors from mini
- (15mL) to pilot
- scale (200L), either disposable or stainless steel and associated disc stack centrifugation and pilot scale equipment, as well as shake flask cultures.

The Associate Scientist may occasionally perform laboratory work during the weekend if required.


Interested? For this role we're looking for the following
education, experience
and
skills

  • Master's degree required.
  • Technical expertise in mammaliancellbased therapeutic protein expression and culture systems.
  • Knowledge in bioengineering, chemical engineering, statistics, molecular biology, analytical methods and cellular metabolism.
  • Good command of spoken and written scientific English is mandatory.
