The BASF team is seeking an experienced and motivated Scientific Programmer to join us. The team focuses on statistical genetics, experimental design, and data analysis aspects in molecular breeding processes, in close collaboration with breeders, geneticists, and software developers.

The Scientific Programmer Specialist will develop, manage, and participate in projects that support efficient data and analytics workflows, computational tools/platforms, and reporting software. The selected candidate will also contribute to the implementation of state-of-the-art algorithms to improve genetic gains in breeding programs and be expected to identify and maintain an evolaving analytics toolbox.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Act as a translator for our customer's digital needs, and hereby interact with project managers, designers, other developers, systems analysts, and R&D specialists to support the design and implementation of the most adequate technological solutions.
• Create innovative, scalable, fault-tolerant software solutions for our customers with clear technical specifications and documentation.
• Automate frequently used scientific workflows, and implement new methods developed in-house or through collaboration.
• With your analytical mindset, you support R&D specialists and contribute to research activities.
• With your technological mindset, you contribute to the build-up of digital foundations, where you always ensure a robust and performant analytics platform for our team.
• You work closely together with the head of Biometrics and the Biometrics Technology lead. You are a reliable technical support during critical periods in the year for delivery of critical results.
• You interact with R&D teams in shared efforts to develop higher yielding varieties and hybrids for farmers.

QUALIFICATIONS

• MSc or PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Bioinformatics or related scientific field with a strong affinity for applied statistics.
• Strong scripting skills in R and Python (including package development) and are experienced in working in a collaborative IT environment.
• Expert in connecting data and analytics (especially REST, GraphQl APIs) in the context of prototyping, established graphical interfaces, and towards expert users.
• Knowledge of Cloud-based analytics.
• Affinity to data integration approaches towards data scientists needs. Hands-on experience is considered a plus.
• You possess a creative and innovative mindset and act proactively.
• Excellent communication and analytical skills.
• Work autonomously with limited supervision from senior team members.
• Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.
