    A day in the life of an Architect

    As an architect you contribute to and maintain road map to facilitate application software development and ensure the development work is prioritized in line with business requirements.


    • He defines and manages loosely coupled and scalable Domain Architecture (end-to-end chains), that is adaptive to change, with sufficient demarcation and decoupling points to other domains;


    • Breaks down desired (business) themes into epics and features, that can be further refined into implementable stories. Defines backlog items to further improve the quality of the domain;


    • Defines realistic and ambitious Implementation Roadmap, also taking non-functional requirements into account.


    • Owns the integration of the services and platforms across the domain, optimizing functional and non-functional requirements and reducing complexity and technical debt;


    • Is the mandated Product Owner of the APIs in his domain, including everything required in the IT chain that fulfils the functionals and non-functionals of these APIs. Designs, aligns, matures and realizes the APIs of his domain, including the required IT chain;


    • Provides guidance to Engineers, managers and teams/squads for the domain, by describing design patterns in Cookbooks. Describes how these best practices can actually be implemented in practice;


    • Is responsible for QBR items (3 quarters) and signs off quarterly plans and/or Change Governance Documents (CGD);


    • Ensures that the architecture is implemented according to plan, minimizing technical/tactical debt. Escalates to management if necessary.

    •Engineering Domain knowledge;

    •Demonstrated experience design skills;


    •Demonstrated Application Interface design skills;


    •Agile Architecting;


    •Knowledge of Architecture frameworks (TOGAF, Zachman, IAF, ...) is a plus.

    And demonstrate following soft skills :

    •Support / Coach / Mentor / Train;


    •Collaboration & co-create;


    •Problem analysis & problem solving;


    •Community Building;


    •Facilitating workshops (prepare & facilitate);

    As an Architect, you will have the opportunity to:

    ·Become the reference architect for the payments application domain with the possibility to extend your knowledge later on to other areas;

    ·Build a career in the Centre of Excellence by specializing in a specific architecture area or growing to the role of Enterprise architect or taking a management role as chapter lead.

    The team

    You will be part of the Centre of Expertise Architecture, a team of about forty architects, led by the ING Belgium Chief Architect, and directly reporting to the CIO. You will be involved on strategic initiatives and have the ability to influence the direction the Information System shall take and contribute to its steering.

    The work is carried out in an Agile way of working with a significant international collaboration with ING teams present on other countries.
